Apartments can be great. If you don’t have a lot of stuff, don’t mind renting and want to be around other people, an apartment might be for you! For some reason, I live in an apartment but do not fall into any of the previously mentioned categories. Aside from being young (Happy 23rd to me on Thursday!), I do not really fall into the apartment-lover criteria. Especially when it comes to the amount of stuff I have, and my slight hatred of strangers. I hope to be off of the renting train soon, but until then I have to make due. Now that it is the holiday season officially, even though mine really started on November 1st, its time for Christmas decorations! Here are my Christmas Decorating Ideas for an Apartment.
With limited space, a large puppy and two people living in one space, it’s tough to find a balance between happy decorations that make you feel good, and feeling cramped into a tiny little box. Here are my decorating ideas to avoid those claustrophobic feelings, lol.
Christmas Tree, but Make it Mini
I am obsessed with all things mini. Mini versions of makeup, bags, decorations and animals all pull at my heartstrings. While my dog is no longer mini, I still love him. Anyway, a Christmas tree can take up a lot of precious apartment space. But, I refuse to not have at least one up for the holidays. So far I technically have three up, and one at my desk at work, but who’s counting. This 3FT Pre-Lit Tree is on sale for $17.50 right now!
Buying a smaller tree was not in the plan this year, but when I saw this 3 foot pre-light Christmas Tree at HomeGoods, it was in my cart so fast. I wanted to try to do a live tree this year, but with a puppy who loves to eat plants (I don’t know why), this was a safer option.
I spent $79 on my 3Ft tree, and it came in a cute rustic bucket tree-stand. Bought a pack of 40 mini bulb ornaments that match my color scheme, and four frosted larger ornaments. Also, I have sprinkled in a few random ones as well, like a cute Lily Pullitzer Palm Tree Ornament, and a FRIENDS coffee mug, because it’s my favorite TV show. I also took a mold of Leo’s paw for a custom paw-print ornament, and just hung that up as well. You can find the paw-print ornament mold, here.
Using a mini, or smaller Christmas tree left me with more space to move around, and more room to add in a few of my year-round decorations. Being able to tie-in my existing decor with my holiday decorations saves me from having to find space to store them for a few months. I have hardly any closet space where I am now, and I hate it. I don’t want to have to take away more space for decorations.
If the Christmas Decorating Ideas for an Apartment isn’t your first decor post of mine, you might notice a few decorations in this post that were also in my Holiday Decor Ideas post. I have been trying to pick out pieces that will work for many seasons when shopping for holiday decorations. Again, to save space.
Practical Decor Ideas
There are two people, my boyfriend and myself, that live in the apartment. Plus, my pampered puppy. I only bought one stocking this year to save mantle space. Honestly, the only things in it are for the dog, and it will probably stay that way (he is the favorite). If you want or need more than one stocking, I suggest stocking weights like the ones linked below that have multiple hooks attached to one base. They take up less space on the mantle, and you can still hang a few. I’ve also linked a few stockings, weights and trees in the widget below similar to the ones I have up. My buffalo check garland is from Joanne Fabrics, and so are the mini pine trees on my mantle! I am in love with these wooden stocking name tags, too!
I moved a storage stool over to the far side of my fireplace, opposite the tree to balance out the space and add in a little storage. There are actually gifts inside it, that I didn’t want to risk the puppy getting into. Tossing in some throw pillows on top that matches the black and white garland made a comfortable little seat for people that come over. It is also practical.
I have been trying to not go crazy with the holiday decorations this year, but its so hard! All of the plaid prints and jewel-tone colors that come out around this time are my favorite. But I am making an effort to shop less, as hard as it is. What is one-holiday decoration you can’t live without? Leave me a comment describing it! I hope my Christmas Decorating Ideas for an Apartment helped provide some space-saving inspiration. Happy holidays!
