This month, I will be traveling to Europe for the first time! Europe is a continent filled with rich history, stunning architecture, and diverse cultures. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, packing for a trip to Europe can be a daunting task, and with this being my first time, I have read all of the tips and tricks so you don’t have to. In this blog post, I’ll provide you with some essential packing and travel tips I’ve read that will help you make the most of your European adventure.
- Pack Light
One of the most important rules of traveling in Europe is to pack light. You’ll be doing a lot of walking, and carrying a heavy suitcase around the cobblestone streets can quickly become a nightmare. My friends have already warned me they will not be assisting with my oversized baggage. Instead, I am trying to limit my luggage to a carry-on size suitcase and backpack. Not only will this make getting around much easier, but it will also save money on baggage fees.
- Check the Weather
Europe’s climate can vary significantly from country to country, so it’s important to check the weather forecast before you pack. With me heading over in March, the temperatures will be around mid 50 degrees. Be sure to bring clothing that can be layered, as temperatures can change quickly throughout the day. A lightweight rain jacket or umbrella is also a must, especially if you’re traveling during the spring or fall. I plan to bring neutral colors in a lot of layers. I’ve linked here what I’ve bought in preparation. A few of my other great clothing options can be found here!
- Bring Comfortable Shoes
As mentioned earlier, you’ll be doing a lot of walking in Europe. So, it’s essential to bring comfortable shoes that can handle all the walking you’ll be doing. Sneakers or walking shoes are a great option, and make sure you break them in before you leave. I bought the ones linked here!
- Bring a Power Adapter
Europe uses a different type of electrical outlet than North America, so you’ll need to bring a power adapter. These can be purchased online or at most travel stores. Keep in mind that the voltage in Europe is also different than in North America, so make sure any electronic devices you bring can handle the voltage. I also purchased a European curling iron, because my mom informed that most US hair tools can burn up due to the voltage differences. I’ve linked those too, here. It took me forever to find one!
- Research Your Accommodations
When choosing accommodations in Europe, it’s essential to do your research. Look for hotels or hostels that are centrally located, so you don’t have to spend too much time and money on transportation. My friends and I are staying in mainly AirBNBs. Also, read reviews from previous guests to get an idea of what to expect.
- Use Public Transportation
Most cities in Europe have excellent public transportation systems, so take advantage of them. Not only is it a cost-effective way to get around, but it’s also a great way to see the city from a local’s perspective. I am so excited personally for the train traveling!
- Learn Some Local Phrases
Learning a few local phrases can go a long way in Europe. Not only will it help you communicate with locals, but it also shows that you respect their culture. Basic phrases like “hello,” “thank you,” and “goodbye” are always a good start. Since I am going to Portugal, I looked up a few common Portuguese phrases and saved them in my phone.
In conclusion, packing for a trip to Europe can be overwhelming, but with these essential packing and travel tips, you’ll be well prepared for your adventure. Remember to pack light, check the weather, bring comfortable shoes, research your accommodations, use public transportation, and learn some local phrases. With these packing and travel tips for Europe mind, you’ll be able to fully immerse yourself in the culture and make the most of your European experience.
