Portugal is a country with a rich history, vibrant culture, and stunning natural beauty. From historic monuments to charming villages, there are countless destinations to explore. If you’re planning a trip to Portugal, here are my top seven of the best places to visit:

  1. The Douro Valley:

The Douro Valley is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its picturesque landscapes and world-renowned vineyards. Visitors can take a scenic cruise down the Douro River, explore the quaint villages that dot the valley, and sample the region’s famous Port wine. When I visited the Douro Valley, my friends and I took a day tour all throughout the beautiful terraces and stopped for port and wine tastings as locally owned, family wineries. It was truly a magical day to remember and one of my favorites on the trip!

  1. Porto:

Porto is a lively and historic city, famous for its beautiful architecture, charming alleyways, and world-renowned Port wine. Visitors can explore the city’s historic center, stroll along the Ribeira waterfront, and sample the local cuisine at one of the city’s many restaurants. We did two port tastings while in town, our favorite of the two was the Sandeman tasting. You are able to experience the cellars that use hundreds of years old barrels and learn all about the port making process.

  1. Sintra:

Located just outside of Lisbon, Sintra is a fairy-tale town that looks like something out of a storybook. Visitors can explore the stunning Pena Palace, which is perched on a hilltop overlooking the town, and wander through the lush gardens of the Quinta da Regaleira. We stayed at the Penha Longha Resort in Sintra, and it was truly beautiful. If you’re looking for a getaway, the sprawling grounds of this resort complete with golf, a spa and multiple pools is the perfect place. The resort also features two Michelin star rated restaurants on the grounds. A must-try!

  1. Lisbon:

Portugal’s vibrant capital city is a must-visit destination for anyone traveling to the country. From the colorful houses of Alfama to the historic Belem Tower, there’s no shortage of things to see and do in Lisbon. Be sure to sample some of the city’s famous seafood dishes and take in the stunning views from the Miradouro de Santa Luzia. Lisbon is now one of my favorite cities, and a must-see for anyone visiting Europe.

  1. The Chapel of Souls:

Located in the heart of Porto, the Chapel of Souls is a beautiful and historic church known for its stunning blue and white tilework. Visitors can admire the intricate patterns on the outside of the church and explore the beautiful interior, which is decorated with gilded wood carvings.

  1. Alfama:

Alfama is one of Lisbon’s oldest and most charming neighborhoods, known for its narrow streets, colorful houses, and traditional Fado music. Visitors can wander through the winding streets, sample some of the city’s best seafood, and take in the stunning views from the Miradouro das Portas do Sol.

The Pena Palace is a stunningly beautiful castle located in the town of Sintra. Visitors can explore the palace’s opulent interior, which is filled with colorful tiles, intricate carvings, and lavish furnishings, and take in the breathtaking views from the palace’s hilltop location.
