Wrapping gifts for the holidays has to be my favorite part of the season. Aside from picking out fun presents for all of my loved ones, getting to be creative and make every little box pretty and different is so fun for me. Trying to think of new gift topper ideas and figuring out how to make all of my wrapping paper and ribbon match can be difficult at times, especially when you run out three different times (why do I buy so much). But, these are my easy, DIY gift wrap ideas!

When I was growing up, my mom would always either use one wrapping paper for all of the gifts or coordinate each person to a different paper, while still making sure they all matched in a way. Everything had to coordinate to make the tree look nice, and my grandma then would try to “save” the wrapping paper after each year. It never really happened much, but she tried.

I chose to use a black and white buffalo check pattern in a lot of my holiday decorations this year, so using a wrapping paper with the same theme helped to tie everything together. I add in pops of Christmas colors with ribbon or gift toppers but try to stay away from the cheesy Christmas wrapping paper. After I ran out of my first black and white checked paper, I opted for a white and silver, small pattern paper to coordinate. Neither pattern is to dominate, but the second white and silver style is a great accent to the bold black and white plaid. I used three different ribbon styles in different colors and patterns to add contrast to the gifts.

The black and white plaid ribbon competes with the buffalo check paper in a fun way. Mixing patterns that are similar enough to each other, but slightly different makes for great contrast while staying within a set theme. The red ribbon added a pop of Christmas to the gifts, and I used $2.99 gift toppers that are originally meant for wreath and centerpiece creations. I bought mine from Joanne Fabrics, but similar options can be found in the widget linked below. The toppers have wire branches and stems which make them easy to manipulate around the ribbon and varying sizes. I love these antler styles!

Another great gift topper idea is to use small ornaments. Honestly, the dollar section at Target has great ones for $1-$2 and they work perfectly on top of a gift box. I got a lot of mine from that section, and I’ve linked a few below as well. I’m not a big gift bag user, because I think everyone likes to actually unwrap something rather than pull it out of a bag. I currently have a giant pile of boxes that the gifts have been shipped in in my kitchen. I keep pulling ones out of the pile to use as a gift box and wrap new gifts as I get them. Plus, they just look so cute under the tree and you can add more fun variations with boxes, and be more creative.
