With all we put our hair through, from the heat of blow dryers, curling irons and straightening irons to coloring, it’s no wonder few of us have beautiful healthy hair that shines. Thankfully, there’s no reason to spend an arm and a leg on pricey products. Or to put your house up for sale on the Providence real estate market and move to a drier climate to stop the frizz. There are some highly effective, natural ways for keeping your hair healthy instead. And no, this post wont have a twist like the How My Hair Grew 12 Inches post.

Natural Coconut Hot Oil Treatment

Coconut oil can work wonders on your hair. If it lacks shine and feels like straw, the rich nutrients, including essential fatty acids, can help to restore and revive you hair. Making it softer and shinier again. In fact, one study that analyzed the effects of various oil on hair, including mineral, sunflower and coconut oil found that coconut oil was best at preventing protein loss. Which resulted in happy, healthier hair.

Using coconut oil in a hot oil treatment helps to deposit oil back into your hair. It also is preventing dryness that can contribute to breakage too. Coconut Oil can also help control frizzy hair or prevent frizz from developing without weighing your hair down. To use it, just add some coconut oil into a bowl (solid or liquid). Place the bowl into a larger bowl that contains boiling water. When the oil is hot, part your hair and massage a small amount onto your scalp. Work more towards the ends of your hair. Afterwards, wrap a towel that’s been heated in the dryer around your head and leave it on until the towel is cool. Now, wash and condition like you normally would.

Use a Natural Homemade Shampoo

Most store-bought shampoos contain all sorts of chemical ingredients that negatively affect the health of your hair. Such as sulfates, which are used to remove dirt and oil but they’re harsh on your hair and scalp. They can strip away natural moisture that keeps your hair soft and shiny. Instead, you might want to try making your own natural homemade shampoo.

While there are many recipes, one of the best and most basic calls for a quarter cup of organic coconut milk, a third cup liquid castile soap and a half teaspoon of vitamin E oil. Add 20 drops of essential oil for scent, perhaps lavender for promoting shinier hair and preventing dandruff; rosemary to nourish hair follicles and encourage growth; or peppermint which provides a tingling sensation and improves blood flow which may prevent hair loss. Combine all the ingredients and pour into a bottle then shake well to mix.

Detox Your Hair the Natural Way

If you’ve been using standard shampoos and conditioners, which typically leave the hair coated with plastic from silicone derivatives, detoxing your hair help rescue it from damage. What that means is that you’ll need to avoid using all commercial hair care products for four weeks. As your hair follicles begin to unclog, natural oils will begin to flow so your hair will feel oilier – if your hair is long enough you may want to keep it up in a ponytail, bun or wear a hat to get through this stage.

While it can be difficult, in the long run your hair will thank you for it. In the meantime, a detox hair mask can help. Combine a half cup of bentonite clay powder with a half cup of aloe vera gel and a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar. Work it into your hair and allow it to sit for about 30 minutes. Rinse well with apple cider vinegar.
